The 2014 Camaro Z/28 that Chevrolet had just unveiled at the 2013 New York Auto Show won't remain unchallenged, said Dodge, who are planning on a more powerful and lighter version of the Challenger SRT8.
The news was revealed by SRT boss Ralph Gilles, who said that Dodge will soon have "an answer for the Z/28", but declined to give further details on the future track-focused Challenger.
Since the current Challenger 392 makes 470 HP and the Camaro Z/28 will offer 500+ HP, it's natural to assume that SRT will go deep into taking the Auburn Hills-built musclecar beyond the 550 HP barrier. Besides putting the car on diet to lose some of the SRT8's 4100 pounds (1,800+ kg), Dodge is expected to upgrade the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 powerplant mounted in the 392.
We're eagerly waiting for more because, as we said back in March, the Challenger is growing fast compared to the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge seems prepared to do just about anything to improve their sales in the musclecar segment.
