Dodge Durango SRT8 Under Consideration

Now that the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is out, we might be just a few steps away from seeing Dodge unleash a similar version for the Durango “sister model”. A Chrysler source told Inside Line that the company is seriously considering putting the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 unit that usually powers SRT8 model under the hood of the Durango.
However, there are a few issues that could cause the project to be halted. First of all, Dodge already offers a performance version of the Durango, the R/T, which uses a 370 hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and only comes with rear-whee-drive. Well, this version is registering poor sales, but things could be different for the SRT8, as this will come with four-wheel-drive.

The other problem is the price. You see, the Durango SRT8 would borrow all the tech goodies from its Jeep mentor, which means that we would receive not just the engine, but also the Brembo brakes that can provide a stopping power that matches the 470 hp of the engine, as well as the adaptive suspension that can keep the car on the road.

However, all those goodies are reasons for which the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is priced at $54,470. It seems that we’ll just have to wait and see if a business case for such a monster can be built.
