Sure, the three-row Dodge Durango should not be directly compared with a GLE, especially the Coupe version. It is a better matchup against the larger GLS, at least in the real world.
But in the always cool confines of a closed track, everything is different. So, these two can easily get pitted against each other in a series of drag and roll races. And that’s exactly what the host of the Sam CarLegion channel on YouTube does. No quarrels here, as the technical cards that were shown at the 0:30 mark clearly show both have the America vs. Germany mettle to compete at the dragstrip.
As always, when it comes to races staged by this YT channel, we are dealing with a windy, unprepped surface. Which kind of makes the results a bit closer to what owners might encounter in a real-world situation. Even better, it’s not just about the drags but also the rolls, which are sometimes even more instructive.
Well, at least the first one at the 6:30 mark is not really that reliable on this occasion. Sam botched the whole “automatic everything” idea by performing manual transmission changes... and bad ones, unfortunately. Anyway, back to the start of the racing action, the first ones are the head-on drags from the 2:46 mark. Interestingly, while the Durango Hellcat is more powerful and ever so slightly lighter than AMG’s GLE 63 S, the first round goes to the latter.
No worries for Mopar aficionados because round two (from 4:35) shows the Durango swiftly exacting revenge. So, the roll races should have determined the absolute winner. But as it turns out, the first one is not to be trusted, while the second attempt (at 7:56) becomes quite inconclusive as we could not determine the winner!
As such, it’s quite clear these two are so evenly matched that it all boils down to driver skill and reaction times... This is quite impressive for these two SUV behemoths, to say the least!
