Doctors Warn Kubica of Infection Risk

The worst has passed for Renault driver Robert Kubica, as the three operations he sustained at the Santa Corona hospital in the last few weeks have been decisive in saving his right arm from potential amputation.

However, if we are to judge the chances he holds to making a complete recovery and returning to Formula 1 in the future, the situation is not as bright. To be more precise, there is still a long way to go until the doctors can clear him for racing, due to the fact that some infections could appear in the next month.

There are milestones to be met, and his journey will be long,” said Santa Corona's spinal unit chief Antonino Massone in a recent interview with Italy's La Stampa newspaper.

For a month, there is the risk of infection. When a bone is exposed for 45 minutes, as it was in this case, it is attacked by bacteria and we need to treat it with antibiotics,” further explained Massone.

However, the Italian doctor did not leave the optimistic tone aside and admitted that Kubica has been truly “extraordinary” as a patient so far. In addition, he assured the Pole's fans worldwide that the doctors are making all efforts possible to give him back his racing career.

The doctors and physiotherapists, for him, are like the engineers at Renault; adjusting, modifying and correcting the machine for the best result,” he added.

The Renault driver has already began rehabilitation in the Santa Corona facility a few days back, after being released from intensive care. According to reports in the Italian media, the recovery process can last up to 3 months in order for Kubica to be able to drive a car.
