Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) has just launched a contest through which the company is looking to find the oldest active certified Rotax aircraft engine in operation. The prize consists of an all expenses (up to $4,300) trip to the Rotax factory in Gunskirchen, Austria.
In four decades, the company claims over 175,000 Rotax aircraft engines have been produced, which is quite impressive to be honest. The fact they decided to have one of their fans visiting the factory has become a popular marketing strategy in the automotive industry as well.

The contest started on April 15 and runs through December 31. BRP claims the winner will be notified in writing before February 1, 2016. Participants must provide a copy of the log book and the latest proof of maintenance as well as personal contact information to his nearest authorized Rotax aircraft engine distributor.

Since we know there a bunch of DIY craftsmen out there, we figured there are also some aviation aficionados who collect these puppies and would like to know about this competition.

Apparently there are approximately 27,000 active 4-stroke and 13,000 active 2-stroke Rotax aircraft engines - certified and uncertified - in the fleet. In other words, the competition is quite big, but it doesn’t mean that a lot of the classic one still exist so you might actually be the lucky fellow.

We are proud of 40 successful years of Rotax aircraft engines, which lead the ultra-light and light sport aircraft market worldwide. Our customers are brand ambassadors and an important part of our success story. To thank them for their loyalty, we decided to open the doors to where over 175,000 Rotax aircraft engines have been produced,” said Thomas Uhr, vice-president BRP-Powertrain and general manager BRP-Powertrain GmbH & Co KG.
