The early reports on how much power the S55 engine on the new M3 and M4 models stunned us. We knew that usually BMW underrates its engines by today’s standards but still, the difference noticed on dyno runs was impressive.
That’s because we actually found out that the 3-liter biturbo engine makes more than the quoted 431 HP at the crank. Almost every dyno readout we saw told us that the M3 now has around 420-430 HP at the wheels. Considering a 10-15% transmission loss, that would put the crank numbers somewhere close to 470-480 HP margin.
That’s almost dead-on what Dinan Engineering got using their engine dyno. This piece of engineering is rare in the tuning world, even at some of the best tuners out there. However, Dinan has one and their result showed 484 HP at the crank. That’s right, it’s an enormous amount of power!
It can get even higher, though. The tuner’s new offering for the F80/F82 combo takes the power up to 516 HP and 489 lb-ft (663 Nm) of torque. That’s a 32 HP gain on average but due to the different power curve, the difference you’ll feel inside the car can go up to 42 HP, at 6,000 RPM, as you can see from the photos posted below.
As far as torque goes, the gain is of 23 lb-ft on average but goes up to 47 lb-ft (63 Nm) at 3,500 RPM. Those are crank numbers, where the BMW also showed more power than we expected, somewhere around 440 lb-ft (600 Nm) instead of the claimed 406 lb-ft (550 Nm).
There’s also a Stage Two upgrade in the works but that one will require a Cold Air Intake and new free flow exhaust to get the power up to 527 HP. However, the exhaust isn’t ready yet so we’ll have to wait a little longer.
Of course, there’s also a price to pay for this extra performance. Dinan is asking $2,500 for the Stage 1 kit while the stage 2 will probably be just around $250 more when launched.
