Yesterday, at the annual Daimler AG press conference, Dieter Zetsche was asked a pretty uncomfortable question which he successfully circumvented.
One of the journalists inquired him whether he wanted to stay on as Daimler AG Chairman and CEO beyond 2016, when his current contract is set to expire, or step down let a successor take over.
“Now is not the time to think about another contract,” said Zetsche behind his magnificent mustache, letting the interviewer know that it was probably not the best moment in time for him to ask that question.
As some of you know, at the beginning of 2013 Zetsche had to face criticism following a series of sluggish gains at Mercedes-Benz, with the Stuttgart brand falling behind both BMW and Audi in global luxury sales.
Both Mercedes-Benz investors and union leaders didn't want to extend his contract for the regular five years, so in February 2013 his CEO job was only secured until 2016. Now that profits and sales are through the roof following a highly-successful 2013, it seems that his successor might have to wait a while longer than expected.
