The engine will be the same 2.2-liter four-cylinder that will power the next generation C-Klasse. Mercedes’ plans for diesel powerplants won’t stop there, as the E-Klasse will reintroduce an oil burner next year, joining the existing range that comprises the ML, GL and R-Klasse Bluetecs. According to wardsauto, Lieb is hoping the Bluetecs range will represent “somewhere in the range of 15% to 20%” of total sales.
The GLK 220 CDI Blue Efficiency that is currently available in Europe develops 170 hp at 3,200 rpm and 400 Nm of torque starting 1,400 rpm. This is enough for a top speed of 205 km/h (127 mph) and a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) sprint of 8.8 seconds.
The GLK is a compact luxury crossover, released as a 2009 model in Europe and as a 2010 model in North America, following its public debut at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show alongside its competitor, the Q5. The model is built in Bremen, Germany, and is the first Mercedes SUV to be built there.
Mercedes is the first to admit the new GLK crossover is an urban SUV that is unlikely to spend much time off-roading. It may attempt to look tough, but its C-Klasse genes ensure it is comfortable on the asphalt road, where it belongs. On the road it is “perfect,” Mercedes says. Off-road it is “balanced.”
The current engine range available consists of:
- 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder, 170 hp (125 kW)
- 3.0-liter V6, 228 hp (171 kW)
- 3.5-liter V6, 268 hp (201 kW)
- 3.0-liter diesel V6, 224 hp (165 kW)
