Because the capital city of India, Delhi, is experiencing alarming levels of pollution caused by diesel emissions and the burning of crop residue in farms around the city, India’s National Green Tribunal - which is apparently a thing - insists on banning diesel cars in Delhi.
Air pollution is a pretty huge problem in India, causing more than 600,000 premature deaths per year. The country's Supreme Court expects the National Green Tribunal to present an allegation to support banning diesel cars on December 15.
This interdiction will apply only to the federal and local Delhi governments, and the private owners of diesel cars will not suffer from this tribunal order, as stated by Delhi government lawyer NP Singh.
Delhi high court compared the city with a gas chamber last week, after pollution levels became alarming. A solution to the problem might be, in the eyes of the high court, the introduction of a new rule from January 1, 2016, which will allow private vehicles with odd and even registration numbers to operate only on alternate days. This solution might sound familiar to those who lived in communist countries before 1989 because this idea was very popular in that period.
If this happens, the government said that the transport department would run extra buses for those who are not allowed to take out their cars on a specific day, according to the BBC.
To make an idea of how bad the situation is, you should know that last month during a very important Hindu festival, Diwali, air pollution in Delhi reached 40 times the limit recommended by the World Health Organization. Maybe even more extreme measures should be taken to counteract this increasingly bad situation.
