Today, we bring you fresh news from the South Korean car crash safety body KNCAP. That's right, they have their own organization mirroring Euro NCAP and conduct frequent tests for the sake of local buyers. Considering Korea is one of the largest automobile producers and markets in Asia, this doesn't come as much of a surprise.
How do we know about KNCAP? It's because Audi recently boasted that its A6 received the maximum score of five stars due to "crash safety and very good pedestrian protection."

Just like Euro NCAP, the South Koreans measure frontal, side-impact and rear-end collisions, braking and rolling behavior, as well as the pedestrian protection offered by the vehicles. Everything seems to be done in exactly the same manner as in Europe, and that's because the two agencies collaborate.

KNCAP was established in 1999 in Seoul, two years after Euro NCAP. It falls "under the auspices of the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs of The Republic of Korea", providing ratings for cars, small trucks and buses. Since 2010, they also give out awards for the safest car in each segment and plan to introduce a new deformable barrier for side-impact tests and a 5th percentile female dummy in the near future. Cool stuff Korea, cool stuff!
