In the past, BMW wanted to protect the transmission of their M3 models (fitted with the automatic gearbox) and didn’t allow drivers to perform burnouts with their favorite cars. However, in recent years, thins changed at the Motorsport division’s headquarters.
With the new generation M3 and M4 models, BMW introduced what they call the ‘Smokey Burnout’ function. What that does is allow you to burn rubber in the good old fashion way you always wanted to.
Since everyone seems to be comparing the new M cars with American Muscle cars, such a feature was more than welcome as well. Thought you needed a 707 HP Hellcat to pull a 100 meter smoke screen? Think again.
As you can see in the video below, a stock BMW M3 is doing the same with a lot less resources. The heart under the bonnet of this beast, and the reason why we’re even seeing such a powerful burnout, is a 3-liter twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine making 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. A lot less than someone would expect, right?
The transmission is a 7-speed DCT gearbox that sends the power to the rear wheels alone through a carbon fiber reinforced polymer prop shaft that can take just as much abuse as the steel one but has a lot less rotating mass, giving you a much better pedal response.
