Dictator Benito Mussolini Gave His Mistress This 1939 Alfa Romeo

World War II dictator Benito Mussolini was reported by his biographer Nicholas Farrerl as a man that had many intimate encounters with female supporters, but one of the women in his life to stand with him until the final moment was Clara Petacci. A proof of their love, the Italian dictator once gifted her an Alfa Romeo 6C 25000 Berlinetta by Touring. The rare collectable will get under the hammer in February, in Paris.

Not only is this a beautiful collectable, but it has history written all over it. A man documented as being a great enthusiast of the finest things in life, Mussolini was naturally drawn to the stunning lines and great performance of an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Berlinetta. The vehicle rolled off the production line in 1939 and became Petacci’s personal car for her to use during the war years.

Chauffeur-driven by Franz Spogler, who later confirmed the vehicle’s identity and its war-time use, the rare beauty is one of Touring’s creations. The Milan-based auto coachbuilder, Carozzeria Touring on its full name, became well known for both the beauty of its designs and patented superleggera construction methods.

But it’s not just the vehicle itself that should bring amazement to any car enthusiast, but it would seem that this was the very car that Petacci and other member of her family drove in convoy from Milan in a bid to find refuge across the Italian border in 1945, only to be stopped by partisans close to Lake Como. Soon after, Mussolini and his mistress would end shot by the Communists. In other words, this vehicle was the last they ever rode in before their execution.

The car was later acquired by a US army officer after the war and shipped directly in the country. Originally re-discovered in 1970 on a farm in New York State, according to RM Auctions, it has been fully and faithfully restored in recent years by world-renowned expert, Francesco Bonfanti. The rare Alfa Romeo reportedly has also won several awards, such as “Best in Class” at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Estate in 2007 and “Best of Show” at the 2011 Salon Prive Concours d’Elegance amongst others.

With an estimated price between EUR 1,9 million ($2,37) and EUR 2,4 million ($2,99), the car will go under the hammer RM’s Paris auction, which will be held at Place Vauban, during the world-famous Retromobile week, 3-4 February, next year.
