Development of the New Mitsubishi Lancer Completely Dropped

Mitsubishi’s stand in Geneva this year might’ve surprised a couple of people. If you visited it you noticed that they only had SUVs out on display and, furthermore, they seemed focused on electric stuff instead of traditional powertrains. That’s right, the Japanese are changing their ways.
The reason behind this showcase is that the current leadership of the company is leaving behind some rather iconic models to focus on crossovers and SUVs. Amongst those quickly forgotten cars lies the iconic Lancer for some reason.

In a recent interview with Car Advice, the Mitsubishi COO, Tetsuro Aikawa said that there are no plans on developing new sedans for now, all the efforts being focused on the like of the Outlander and other similar PHEVs and EVs.

“Unfortunately, for a while we are not planning any development of sedans. While I’m the president probably no introduction of the next-generation Lancer… we will continue to sell current Lancer,” he said.

That’s deeply disturbing for fans of the brand and especially the Lancer community that is quite impressive in numbers. Furthermore, the current model is already 8 years old and could use some new tech if they plan on keeping it on the market and actually selling one or two.

Apart from the shifting focus in terms of development goals, the COO also claims that the sedan market is just too competitive and it’s hard to return a profit in it these days.

Unfortunately, this also means that there’s no Evo version in sight either, at least for the time being and that’s a damn shame. The car we all grew up with could end up being abandoned due to the shifting demand on the market.
