Detroit who? Never heard about Detroit Electric? No need to worry or feel ashamed about it. This company went belly up in 1939, after 32 years in the electric car business.
They sold vehicles to people like Thomas Edison, Mamie Eisenhower, Clara Ford and John D. Rockefeller Jr. and had a great deal of success in the 1910s, with over 1,000 cars sold each year. Like many companies from that era, Detroit Electric disappeared just before World War 2.
Thanks to Youngman Automotive Group and ZAP, the name was revived in 2008 and after five years Detroit Electric has resurfaced teasing its first modern era EV.
While no technical details have been revealed, Detroit Electric says that their "limited-edition two-seat 100% electric sportscar will be launched next month", with a "diverse family of high-performance electric vehicles to follow". The whole operation will generate 180 local jobs in Michigan by the end of 2013.
"We are proud to become the fourth car manufacturer born out of Detroit, and the first to manufacture a pure electric sports car from Michigan," said Don Graunstadt, Detroit Electric CEO. "We are committed to doing our part for this great revival of Detroit through innovation, entrepreneurship and determination – what we like to call 'Detroit 2.0'. Our investors and management team are thankful to the State of Michigan for the help provided in allowing Detroit Electric to carry on the legacy that began in Michigan so many years ago."
Detroit Electric is headed by Albert Lam, the former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, and this makes us even more anxious about this whole new project.
