After 74 years of inactivity, the Detroit Electric motor company is back, pulling the covers of their new all-electric sports car.
Known as the SP:01 for now, the rear-wheel-drive car has an aluminum chassis, based on the Lotus Elise’s platform, and has a full carbon-composite body bolted to it, weighting 2,403 lb (1,090 kg) in total.

The car is powered by an air-cooled AC electric motor said to be made in US, sucking juice from two 37 kWh lithium-polymer batteries. It will generate 201 bhp (150 kW) and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm) of torque, with a range of 180 miles (290 km) based on the New European Driving Cycle.

Oh, and it will also have a four-speed manual gearbox as standard, a two-speed automatic and a five-speed manual to be offered as optional. Of course, you won’t have to press the clutch pedal when you accelerate from a stand still, or when you want to stop, as the motor will simply turn off by it self. You have to use the clutch only when changing gears, not to damage the transmission like in a normal car.

Power steering will not be available, but it will come with standard ABS, Brembo brakes, bucket seats and a regenerative braking system. Also, no radio will equip the EV, as a normal smartphone can be plugged in to be used as some sort of infotainment system and to operate other functions like opening the doors, set lightning, heat and charge the car.

Detroit Electric said that only 999 SP:01 units will be made, deliveries being scheduled to start in August, with each vehicle costing $135,000 (€105,510) for the standard version.
