Revived after 74 years, Detroit Electric unveiled its first modern era electric car two months ago. Based on the Lotus Elise, the SP:01 sportscar was set to hit the assembly line in August. Until late last week, when the automaker announced that production will be delayed by at least a month.
Speaking to Detroit News, Detroit Electric CEO Don Graunstadt said production will start sometime in September due to a delay in finalizing its manufacturing location in Wayne County, Michigan.
The new Detroit Electic SP:01 will be powered by an air-cooled AC electric motor and two 37 kWh lithium-polymer batteries. It will generate 201 bhp (150 kW) and 166 lb-ft (225 Nm) of torque, with a range of 180 miles (290 km). The EV will have a starting price of $135,000 (€105,510) and Detroit Electric hopes to sell 999 units to be able to build new vehicles next year.
If things go as planned, the American company will launch affordable sedan and hatchback models in 2014.
