The Volkswagen Group, a serious contender for the title of largest auto company in the world and debatably the greatest of 2017, is getting ready to celebrate another record year in terms of sales.
Despite the bad publicity still coming from the Dieselgate scandal, despite its inability to properly prepare for the introduction of the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and despite a few other factors, the sales numbers available thus far point to a great result for 2018.
The Germans said at the end of last week that for the period from January to November a total of 9.92 million vehicles were sold, representing a 1.8 percent increase compared to the same period of last year. That means VW is currently preparing for its best year ever.
“The rise in worldwide deliveries in the year is a very respectable result. Although the volume target is no longer our top priority, high volumes allow us to achieve economies of scale,” said in a statement Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen group sales.
“In November, there was a reduction in the effect of WLTP in Europe. We are confident that we will be able to close 2018 with a figure slightly above the previous record level of 2017 despite the challenging market environment.“
Percentage-wise, the group recorded the biggest increase in sales for the January-November period in Brazil (28.7 percent) and Russia (20.3 percent), but in the grand scheme of things the volumes there are small.
In the biggest markets, Germany and China, the increase was a tad smaller, 0.4 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively.
There was a single region where the group sales declined, and even there the drop was not at all that steep. That region is North America, where VW sold 1.4 percent fewer cars than in the same period of last year.
