DesignworksUSA Gets Green Good Design Award 2010

Perhaps the most non-automotive of all the automotive design studios in the world, BMW's DesignworksUSA has once again been recognized as one of the trend-setters in its field. This time, the group has been awarded the Green Good Design Award 2010 by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum.

Why did the organization receive the award? The organizers of the competition selected BMW's studio because of the work they performed for one of their clients, Landscape Forms. That is for what can be simply described as streetlights.

But not your everyday streetlights. The winning projects are the so called Hi-Glo and Lo-GLo. The former is a 12-foot pedestrian light, while the latter is a 3-foot pathway light. Both feature LED cartridge technology and meet lighting
requirements.

“In past days, eco friendly products used to present a green look and feel. Nowadays designers are facing the challenge to define new aesthetic experiences for products that incorporate new values of sustainability,”
said Laurenz Schaffer, DesignworksUSA president.

“With the design of Hi-Glo and Lo-Glo we have made the attempt to integrate these aspects as part of a comprehensive line of site furniture with a light and animated aesthetics that fits globally with agile and modern urban environment.“

The Green Good Design Award has been established in 1950 as a means to highlight sustainable design. According to BMW, the winning studio had to fend off “thousands of submissions from over 46 nations.” The submissions can include products, programs, people, government, environmental planning and architecture.
