Denny Hamlin to Race in Phoenix

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reparatory surgery underwent by Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin yesterday went well, and the Martinsville winner is expected to make it into the Phoenix race, according to a press release issued by Joe Gibbs.

"Denny had his surgery this morning and everything went well," said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing.

"He will start rehab immediately and now we can concentrate on getting his knee back to the full strength. The doctors tell us it will improve with each passing week and that he cannot damage it by driving. We expect him to be in the car in Phoenix, but we're fortunate to have Casey Mears standing by in case he would need to come out of the car for any reason."

Hamlin's surgery caused quite a stir in the NASCAR paddock, with at least two teams exchanging drivers, more or less as a direct result of Hamlin's adventure.

Yesterday, Scott Riggs has been confirmed as the driver of the No. 90 Keyed-Up Motorsports Chevrolet for at least the next two races, at Phoenix and Texas. His arrival became a necessity after Casey Mears has been announced as Denny Hamlin's replacement for the Phoenix race.

Mears was Keyed-Up Motorsports' driver in the beginning of the season, with his contract expiring after the first six races. Mears will now act as the backup driver should Hamlin's knee fail during the April 10 race.
