Dennis Rules Out Running for FIA Presidency

Former F1 team principals – retired or still in the sport – would not make good FIA presidents. McLaren's boss (until March the 1st) Ron Dennis insisted on that, arguing that someone who has worked for a long period of time heading a Formula 1 team could not be totally impartial when it comes to running the International Automobile Federation.

Max Mosley is yet to announce his decision on whether he is to step down as president of the FIA or run for another mandate in June, this year. There was some speculation last week that former Royal Bank of Scotland CEO Sir Fred Goodwin – a motor racing enthusiast himself – is considering running for the FIA presidency this summer.

That would be ok, said Dennis, but it seems that former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt is also considering running for the same position in June. Also, former Toro Rosso co-owner Gerhard Berger was also linked with a potential candidature for FIA's top spot, as he admitted late last year – as soon as he sold all his shares of the Faenza-based outfit – that “anything is possible”.

However, Dennis insisted that someone who has lived and breathed for a company for many years could not be impartial as FIA president. He also slammed rumors that he was interested in the aforementioned job, although he thinks he is qualified for running the FIA.

“I feel very strongly that no senior member of any Formula One team should ever go to hold a senior position within the FIA. Anybody who's in a position of leadership of a company has to live, sleep and breathe that brand, and I think it would be impossible for me - even though I consider myself extremely disciplined – to be completely impartial regarding all the teams. don't think it's possible for anyone who's led a successful team, frankly, and it would therefore be inappropriate for me,” stated Dennis in an interview for F1 Racing magazine.
