DeLorean to Use Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe Platform

Pontiac will be soon discontinued but it seems like the Solstice GXP Coupe will live on. DeLorean Motor Company is looking to use the Kappa-platform on which this particular model is based on to design its future car.

“JZD always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts,” said James Espey, Vice President of the DeLorean Motor Company according to Jalopnik.

The Pontiac brand will be phased out at the end of 2010, General Motors announced in late April after several months of denying rumors hinting that this particular division is going to be killed. Along with Pontiac, General Motors will discontinue most of its models, including the G8 which was initially believed to survive the restructuring process.

"The G8 will not be a Caprice after all. I'd mentioned it, and said we were studying it, giving it a serious look, because a car like the G8 was just too good to waste.”

"That's all still true. But I have to say that, with my new "marketing" hat on, upon further review and careful study, we simply cannot make a business case for such a program. Not in today's market, in this economy, and with fuel regulations what they are and will be," Bob Lutz said in July, denying rumors that the G8 will live on.

The latest Pontiac Solstice Coupe is offered in two versions, the base model or the GXP flavor. It comes with rear-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspensions and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The car is powered either by a 2.4L DOHC engine (173 hp at 5800 rpm and 167 lb-ft at 4500 rpm of torque) or by a turbocharged 2.0L DOHC unit (260 hp at 5300 rpm and 260 lb-ft at 5300 rpm of torque).
