Deliveries of the BMW M6 GT3 Begin Ahead of New Racing Season

As BMW’s M6 GT3 units are being shipped around the world, the first team to receive the car is the veteran BMW squad, Turner Motorsport. Present in Munich, where he attended the BMW Season Review, the team’s principle Will Turner received the first two M6 GT3s.

The U.S team will race these in January 2016, competing in the GTD class of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in North America. The 12-race event kicks off at the legendary Daytona Raceway in Florida.

One of the cars will be driven by BMW works driver Jens Klingmann, who will pilot alongside Bret Curtis. Returning for the second season, driving the second car will be Marcus Paltalla and Michael Marsa.

Turner has said that he is very eager to see how the new cars will behave because compared to the former BMW Z4 GTR, this race car is a completely different concept, and that’s why he expects a very interesting championship.

The second private team to receive the M6 is Schubert Motorsport. The German-based team will try to defend its ADAC GT Masters title in 2016, and it will also compete in the well-known Nurburgring 24 Hours.

Another German team that also received its new BMW race cars is Rowe Racing, which replaced its former Mercedes SLS GT3s and will compete in the Blancpain GT Championship, the Nurburgring 24 Hours, and Macau’s FIA GT World Cup.

The new and improved BMW M6 GT3 was revealed in May 2015 during a private event at the Nurburgring 24 Hours race. German officials are expecting this car to be more economical and easier to drive than its predecessor, the Z4 GT3.

It costs 379,000 euros (410,566 dollars) and it is powered by an adapted version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 used in the road spec BMW M5 and M6. Although the engine is capable of 585 horsepower, the outputs will vary depending on racing regulations. Being made from carbon-fiber, the M6 GT3 weighs 1,300 kg (2,866lbs), meaning it produces around 451hp per tonne.

The M6 GT3 marks the return of the six-series to racing after a 24-year break. The mighty 635 CSi spent more than a decade on track between 1980 and 1992 and won 26 out of 600 races in which it competed.
