Defective Fuel Pump Triggers Piaggio and Vespa Recall

Bad news for certain owners of Piaggio and Vespa scooters, as the NHTSA issues the recall campaign number 15V066000, aimed at bringing 2,613 scooters back in the workshops of authorized dealers for repairs to the fuel system.

According to the NHTSA, the affected scooters may stall while being operated as a result of a fuel pump malfunction. Two scenarios involving these scooters have been reported, with one customer declaring that the engine of his two-wheeler stopped during operation. The other scenario saw a fully warm scooter being operated at ambient temperatures whose engine failed to restart after being shut off for around 15-20 minutes.

An investigation carried out by the scooter manufacturer showed that the fuel pump indeed ceased to function because of a clearing problem. The space between the impeller and the inner pump housing turned out to be insufficient due to the impeller swelling. No warning for this issue was detected, so the problem could show up inadvertently and seriously increase the risk of a crash.

Piaggio is contacting all the customers and ask them to take their vehicle to an authorized dealer for a free repair. The dealers will install a new fuel pump, and the components can be identifies by a brown cap on the motor of the fuel pump vs. a black cap on the old component. The same source mentions that all new production will have a corresponding, upgraded component installed. The planned owner notification schedule spans from March 16 to April 17, 2015.
