Dear Ford: Bring Back the Mondeo ST as a Turbo AWD Rocket!

Remember the days when the Ford Mondeo ST would battle with the Mazda6 MPS and Vectra VXR/OPC to see who’s the fastest and coolest? We do, and we hope Ford does as well. Because a new Ford Mondeo is just around the corner, arriving in Europe somewhere in the early part of 2015, it’s time the Blue Oval reconsider its go-fast sedans.

Conspicuously missing from the current generation, the go-fast badge invokes memories of the ST 220, a car which almost a decade ago packed its bonnet with a 3-liter V6 engine and went off to war. You know, 3 liters, as in half an Aston Martin V12… yes, that Ford V6. It was capable or doing 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds, which is fast even by today’s standards.

This next rendering by Auto Projecoes makes it clear that a new Mondeo ST is possible and could look rather sexy. With all the awards the Fiesta and Focus ST are winning, it’s definitely the right time for the Mondeo to shine.

So, what would be the ideal engine for this car? The answer to that question come from the author of the rendering, who suggests the new 2.3-liter EcoBoost developed for the new Mustang is ideal. In the pony, it makes about 300 hp, but Ford is tuning it to an even higher level for the upcoming Focus RS. A 330 hp Mondeo – wouldn’t that be nice?

Given the old Focus RS had a 300 hp engine and front-wheel drive, can the Mondeo ST get away without sending any power to the back? Maybe, but it probably shouldn’t. Volkswagen has already revealed some of the details on thew Passat, also competing in the mid-size market. The top version will have a 2-liter turbo engine rated at 280 hp, available only with all-wheel drive. In America, there’s also the little matter of the new Subaru Legacy, which you can get with a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder and comes with all-wheel drive as standard.
