De Silvestro In Serious Indy 500 Crash

Simona de Silvestro suffered a terrible accident in today's practice sessions for this year's Indy 500 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, causing a long halt during the Thursday action of the famous IndyCar race.

De Silvestro's accident took place early in the practice session, as her car seemed to have encountered some mechanical failures while exiting Turn 3 of the Indianapolis track. Once she lost control of her car, the thing went wild and hit the wall at high speed, becoming airborne in the process.

But that was only the beginning of it, as the car took a journey of itself during the crash, becoming airborne for the second time in the long straight and afterwards landing upside down on the track. Finally, it caught fire instantly.

The Indy driver managed to somehow get out of the car without any assistance from the race marshals and was taken to the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis immediately. According to primary reports on her medical condition, she was awake and alert and has only suffered some second degree burns in the accident. In fact, only hours later, she was released from the aforementioned medical institution.

Thank you for all the well wishes. Trying to get rid of the Mickey Mouse gloves as soon as possible,” wrote De Silvestro on her Twitter account.

According to the official IndyCar website, she will meet with the series' medical staff on May 20 to evaluate her driving status.
