De la Rosa Asks FIA to Legalize Team Orders

If Ferrari's team orders in the German Grand Prix have been followed by intense criticism from the media, drivers and teams shortly after the Sunday race, people have now started to evaluate the situation in the Scuderia's favor.

After Michael Schumacher, Bernie Ecclestone and Mark Webber, Spanish race driver Pedro de la Rosa – former president of the Grand Prix Drivers Association – also urged the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to turn the page on the team tactics saga. According to the veteran driver, the whole team orders ban is non-sense to begin with, as F1 is a team sport and such tactics should be allowed freely.

We must turn the page and not discuss this nonsense anymore. We need to legalise it, because you cannot lie to the spectators; team orders have always existed and will always exist because this is a team sport,” said De la Rosa in an interview with the EFE news agency.

The Spaniard admitted that he would gladly step aside and let his teammate Kamui Kobayashi take the center stage of a race if that were to benefit the team,

I understand very well and I think the whole world does as well that this is a team sport. In the first race it would be absurd, but after the halfway point of the championship, team orders seem logical to me,” added the 39-year old driver.

What's interesting about this whole situation is that, while others now seem to understand Felipe Massa's position within the Ferrari team, the very Brazilian driver begins to have second thoughts on his role at the Scuderia. Obviously, his discussion with Rubens Barrichello earlier this week had quite an influence on him, as he now seems determined not to repeat the move he made in Germany too soon.

Asked if the situation were to happen again in Hungary, Massa told reporters he “would win.”
