De Ferran and Luczo Dragon Racing Form New IndyCar Team

Former Champ Car racer Gil de Ferran has just completed a dreamy move this week, after announcing he joined efforts with Luczo Dragon Racing for setting up a new IndyCar team for the 2010 season. In a time when most team owners are struggling for survival in the series, such joint ventures seem the way to go for smaller teams, especially if they want to do an Indy programme with at least two cars running.

This is actually the newly-formed team's aim for the 2010 season of IndyCar, as De Ferran – new team owner and managing partner of the Luczo Dragon Racing/de Ferran Motorsports – will try to secure current driver Raphael Matos a competitive teammate for the upcoming campaign.

Matos made a huge debut with Luczo Dragon Racing last season, finishing the year as the 13th best driver on the grid but 1st overall in the rookie classification. Obviously, he was retained by the team for 2010 also and will seek to improve his performances this year. De Ferran, on the other hand, will look to begin a successful organization in the IndyCar Series, after previously handling his own team in the American Le Mans Series.

This is a hugely exciting announcement. Our aim is to put together a state-of-the-art motorsports operation with a sharp focus in high technology and developing the science of performance,” said an excited Gil De Ferran after the announcement was made.

The foundation is set and with our collective resources and leadership we hope to break new ground and become one of the most competitive teams in the IZOD IndyCar series,” added the 2-time ChampCar champion.

We have been talking to Gil about this for some time and we felt this was the perfect opportunity to combine our resources. Gil has the experience of working with major manufacturers and leading racing teams all over the world and we feel we can bring the essential business acumen and managerial expertise to the operation,” added Steve Luczo, co-owner of the former Luczo Dragon Racing alongside Jay Penske.
