The 2013 Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300 Daytona race left at least 11 fans injured after a dreadful crash occured into the final corner.
About 12 cars piled up after Regan Smith's Chevrolet, who was leading the race, turned sideways throwing Kyle Larson's vehicle in the fence. The impact was so strong that the car's dismembered engine drew a hole in the railing, letting big pieces of debris into the stands and hitting the spectators.
According to a CNN report, 28 fans were injured, six of them, including two in critically condition, being taken by ambulance to the Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans," the Daytona International Speeday representantives said in a statement released Saturday. "We are in the process of repairing the facility, and we will be ready to go racing tomorrow."
Despite the tragic event, it seems that Sunday's Daytona 500, the season's first NASCAR Sprint Cup event, will go on as planned.
The Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300 Daytona race was eventually won by Tony Stewart.
