Putting US Police and motorcycles in the same sentence usually yields a natural answer, and that is Harley-Davidson Electra Glide in one of its incarnations. Well, things seem to be a tad different now when it comes to the police department in Daytona, as the cops have apparently gotten 12 Victory “Commander” baggers in full police trim. And they look smashing!
To have things clear straight from the beginning, the Electras had already more than enough miles on them, and it was the right time to be sidelined. The PD has chosen the Commander, which is an authority model based on the Victory Cross Country, one of the several bikes Victory has started to equip for such purposes. The bikes are scheduled for delivery on October 1st, and they have been chosen after the riding officers ran a head-to-head test of the Victories and the Harleys. Among the key factors which led to choosing the Victory machines over the Harley, the officers mentioned the reduced engine heat, superior comfort, better braking and safety, reliability and the very generous storage.

DBPD Traffic Unit Officer Jason Kilker says that Victory Motorcycles has also provided a most comprehensive two-page list with authority optional equipment including “but not limited to, full-size AR-15 rifle racks, heated grips, and a mind-blowing LED light package that no one can match.”

The specialized department Victory Police Motorcycles (VPM) is based in Arizona and it converts Cross Country, Cross Roads and Victory Vision machines to authority-spec bikes. Check with the Victory Police Motorcycles website for more details on the new police motorcycles which you might get to see on patrol more and more. What comes around goes around, it seems, as the California Highway Patrol decided in favor of Harley motorcycles for their new fleet, giving BMW R1200RTP's a break. And the choice has nothing to do with the recent and rather nasty 2014 BMW R1200RT recall affair...
