Daytona Dirt Track Construction in Progress

Some four months ago, Daytone International Speedway was announcing that it was going to begin construction of a quarter-mile dirt track, a part of a project initiated by the City of Daytona Beach’s redevelopment plans for the Municipal Stadium. Recently, “The World Center of Racing” revealed the new quarter-mile dirt track is under construction and it has already begun taking shape.

The project includes replacing the dirt used for the Flat Track racing events with sports turf. The new dirt track at the Daytona International Speedway will be located outside Turns 1 and 2 in the West Lot and will have 5,000 temporary seats.

As we said in a previous post, the dirt track that will be used for motorcycle and high-performance kart racing will be made up of lime rock, which is currently in place and graded. This week, construction crews will reportedly complete the following tasks:
  • Infield area graded and sod installed
  • Perimeter road base installed
  • Continue installation of the electrical system for lights and timing and scoring

The new dirt track will have more than 5,000 temporary seats and lighting will be provided by Musco Lighting.

Construction on the quarter-mile dirt track will be complete in time for the upcoming Daytona KartWeek by Cometic Gasket on December 28-30 as well as the March 3-4 AMA Pro Racing Flat Track motorcycle events, which are a part of 2010 Daytona 200 Week by Honda.
