David Coulthard Goes All Gymkhana on Race Of Champions Course, Drifts Ariel Atom

Sure, the Race Of Champions is all about precision, but what if one of the steering wheel start attending were to switch to sideways shenanigan mode and redefine the event?

No, this is not a piece of drifting fantasy. Instead, we are here to discuss about a stunt that was recently pulled by David Coulthard. The former Formula One driver is once again taking part in the Race of Champions and he’s decided to give us a custom approach.

The British driver was approaching the Race of Champions Skills Challenge Course, but instead of getting around those posts as quick as possible, he went all Gymkhana.

This has nothing to to with Ken Block, who only reinvented the concept. Instead, we are talking about a series of driving maneuvers that come from the British car culture and see drivers drifting Caterhams around tight handling courses.

On this occasion though, Coulthard found himself inside an Ariel Atom. As those of you paying attention to the track car genre know, the Atom isn’t exactly a slip angle-friendly contraption.

This is one of those machines that just wants to grip and go as fast as it can. Nevertheless, Coulthard does his best to upset the Atom’s balance and we don’t have to wait for too long in order for this to lead to tire-melting results.

The keen driver also had a joyful passenger while he was playing the sliding game, with a Sunday Times Driving editor riding shotgun at the time.

As for the actual Race Of Champions 2015 action, this is set to take place on November 20-21. So while Coulthard has offered us a bit of an appetizer, he has plenty of time to bring those rear tires up to temperature. And you can check it all out in the clip below.
