Known to be the best place for Formula One retirees over the years – Jean Alesi, Mika Hakkinen and Ralf Schumacher are sole proof of that – the DTM series might see yet another important F1 figure on its grid next year. The Scot was present to the DTM season finale at the Hockenheim Ring last month and was apparently impressed with the level of competitiveness in the machineries.
Although he spent the last years of his F1 life as a Red Bull-backed driver – competing for Red Bull Racing – Coulthard is best known for his 9-year stint with McLaren Mercedes. Therefore, if he's serious about the DTM move, his future team will likely be Mercedes-backed (either a works team or a privateer).
“The cars are difficult to drive, but they are great. They look great as well. In F1 we talk about double diffusers; these cars look like they have diffusers to a factor of 15! The technology level is very high,” said the 38-year old Scottish driver, as reported by the German media in recent days.
“I wanted to take a year off to see if I missed racing and to see if there were any options outside of F1,” added DC, who last week admitted that the thrill and excitement in Formula One last year – not to mention his former team's massive success in the series – has made him more eager to return in a racing cockpit.
Although Le Mans Series was also an option to be considered by Coulthard, the Scot would be more than welcomed in the DTM.
“I would like to see Coulthard in a DTM car,” DTM chief Hans Werner Aufrecht was quoted as saying to the media.
