Japanese automaker Nissan is set to relaunch its Datsun brand on July 15, in India, where the company will also unveil the nameplate’s first new low-cost vehicle.

According to AutocarIndia, the first Datsun in 32 years will be a five-door hatchback designed for emerging markets such as India, Russia, South Africa and Indonesia. The low-cost vehicle will reportedly be priced in the sub-Rs-four-lakh category, which means less than $7,300.

The new Datsun hatchback, which is scheduled to hit dealerships in mid-2014, is regarded as a Dacia Logan competitor, but we doubt Renault will have the two vehicles stab each other, since the Romanian car is also marketed under the Nissan badge in South Africa or Mexico.

Whatever the case, the future affordable Datsun car will probably be powered by a 1.2-liter gasoline engine sourced from the Nissan Micra. Most likely, a diesel option is out of the question considering the price tag, but more info will be available in mid-June, when Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn will unwrap the new vehicle.
