If there was a heaven for Pontiac GTOs, Dana Mecum’s GTOs lot would probably be it. The best part is that the nine superb, very rare and well-preserved cars in the lot will be hitting the auction block in July this year.
This includes the one-off 1965 Pontiac Hurst Geeto Tiger that, last April, was announced to become available in June. It is actually one of the main attractions of the lot, together with a rare 1965 Pontiac GTO Hurst Riverside Pace Car, with 20,650 miles, two of which were ever built for the 1965 Riverside 500.
But the other “stars” of the lot are nothing to scoff at, either, so get your paddles ready.
Dana’s GTOs is the name of the lot that will go under the hammer during the auction house’s Indy 2020 event, starting on July 10 and ending on the 18th of the same month. Nine GTOs are included, many of which were owned by Mecum founder and CEO Dana Mecum more than once, as he explains in a blog post on the official website.
The same post recalls Dana’s long-lasting romance with Pontiac GTOs, which goes back to the day when he took his mother’s Orbit Orange Judge street racing against a friend’s 1965 Chevrolet. His first GTO was his third car ever, offered as a gift by his Pontiac dealer father, who wanted to give him a car that he would be able to drive as he wanted without breaking it.
That turned out to be a four-speed, 1966 GTO convertible in red. It is not included in the lot because it holds a very special place in Dana’s heart.
The ones that are on sale are special, too. Dana Mecum has owned some of these several times, because he makes it a point of buying them back after their owners choose to move on. “I call it selling them on a string. You cannot own everything, but you can keep track of the cars you love,” he explains.
The black 1966 Pontiac GTO Coupe, for instance, is one of those cars that Dana Mecum likes to keep an eye on. Awarded GTOAA Concours Gold in 2010, it comes with 37,150 miles on the clock and the prerequisite that the future owner will sell it back to Mecum when they decide to part ways with it.
The other stars of the lot are a 1964 Royal Bobcat painted in superb aquamarine, a 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge Convertible, 1 of 168 produced, painted in eye-catching Verdoro Green, a 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible, a 1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV, a 1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible and a 1967 Pontiac GTO, unrestored with 13,600 miles.
