Rumor has it Dan Akerson will step down as General Motors chairman and CEO next year, although the 65-year-old has yet to notify company of his plans.
The news comes via The Economic Times, who says that “executives at GM’s partner Peugeot believe Akerson will most likely hand over the reins next year, and certainly not stay beyond 2015”, quoting “people with knowledge of talks that the French car maker has with GM earlier this year”.

However, the same reports claims an official search for his successor has not yet begun, despite the fact that speculation about Akerson’s departure surfaced earlier this year as well. “I assume that at some point he will decide he has done what he has wanted to do and will step down, but no one has a date for that,” a GM insider added.

If this rumor proves to be real, Akerson is likely to be replaced by GM president Mark Reuss, but global product development chief Mary Barra and vice chairman Steve Girsky are also in the books.
