Yamaha Motor France and Red Bull are happy to announce they signed famous cross-country rally rider Cyril Despres as the main pilot of the team. Despres' team mate will be fellow-countryman Michael Metge.
It's been less than half a year since the 5-time Dakar winner Cyril Despres and KTM announced that their partnership reached an end and the Frenchman was to leave the Austrian team. Despres, 39, will be riding the Yamaha YZ450F motorcycle and will receive massive support Red Bull.

Despres declared that the move finds him in a very motivated mood and he plans to help both team and newcomer Metge write a new glorious page of Dakar history: “I am very motivated by the idea of joining Yamaha’s ‘men in blue.’

I remember watching them on TV as a boy and dreaming…within the brand I have discovered a strong feeling of family, with an excellent flow of communication and a technical staff that is motivated and open to feedback.

I am certain we will form a strong, united team, focused on one objective: achieving victory. I am also delighted to have Michael Metge as support rider. He is an ambitious newcomer who entered his first Dakar successfully this year and is extremely motivated,” Despres added.

In case he manages to win the 2014 Dakar, Despres will have equaled the number of victories of Stephane Peterhansel, the only rider to have triumphed at Dakar more than the new Yamaha pilot.
