Daimler has announced a recall for approximately 840,000 vehicles in the US.
The German company didn’t specify the model years affected or the models that it will recall. However, it expects to spend 340 million euros (approx. $382 million) to fix the affected units, an expense that will be added to the 2015 financial year.
Daimler has said that it will recall 705,000 Mercedes-Benz cars in the United States of America, along with around 136,000 Daimler vans. Since the automaker sells an entire range of models in the US and most of them achieve high volumes, it’s safe to say that several models are affected by the recall action. Meanwhile, in the van department, Daimler has a generous range of commercial vehicles in the US market as well, but it is unclear which of the models are affected.
The German company did not mention what components they want to check on the affected vehicles. However, the recall campaign will probably involve a check procedure for the airbag components, followed by a replacement of the affected parts. Most likely, the carmaker will replace Takata airbag inflators.
As you surely know if you are an avid reader of our page, the expansion of the Takata airbag recall did involve some Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The expansion of the recall action was announced after the completion of an investigation related to the death of a Ford Ranger driver. The model was fitted with a Takata airbag inflator that exploded on deployment and threw plastic and metal shrapnel causing the driver’s death.
Daimler moved on to explain the financial impact of this recall, and that it will be recognized as a provision for the 2015 fiscal year. The German corporation’s net profit is set to decrease to €8.7 billion (approx. $9.8 billion), still well over the €7.3 billion ($8,2 billion) result of the 2014 fiscal year.
Daimler AG also pointed out that the employee’s profit participation for the successful year of 2015 and the dividend proposal would remain unchanged, as will the earnings expected for the 2016 financial year.
