Daimler to Spend Millions on Hydrogen Fuel Stations

Earlier on Wednesday, German automaker Mercedes announced the conclusion of the 30,000 km journey (18,640 miles) of its three B-Klasse F-Cell models. The months-long trip, successful as it was from the cars' performance point of view, proved to be a disaster when it comes to the infrastructure needed for these cars to become a reality.

Soon after the trip ended in Stuttgart, rumors began spreading about Daimler's intention to invest heavily in a hydrogen stations infrastructure that would allow it to eventually launch fuel cell vehicles onto the market.

According to Reuters, citing sources with knowledge of the matter, Daimler is so determined to change the world after the experience it had during its trip around the world that it plans to invest millions of Euros in hydrogen fueling stations, starting in Germany.

For the project, Daimler intends to partner with several other partners, including Linde, who supported the F-Cell tour. In addition to Linde, Daimler will get involved in a major project with utility EnBW, oil giant OMV and French company Total. Together, the parties intend to create a network of hydrogen fueling stations that will span from the Alps to the North Sea.

“With the F-CELL World Drive we have shown, that the time for electric vehicles with fuel cell has come. Now the development of the infrastructure has to pick up speed,”
Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars said earlier today.

“For only an adequate number of hydrogen fueling stations enables car drivers to benefit from the advantages of this technology: high range, short refueling times, zero emissions."
