Daimler’s current CEO, Dieter Zetsche, stated that he would like to be replaced by a woman once he steps down from his position at the German company.
Dieter Zetsche’s contract will Daimler expires at the end of 2016, and his successor is still unknown. In an interview with German magazine Bunte, a publication aimed at a female audience, Zetsche stated that he would like Daimler’s new CEO to be a woman. “I would find it fantastic if it works out,” the 62-year-old executive said.

Momentarily, there is no female successor in sight in Daimler’s current ranks. The only woman with a high function in Daimler’s board of management was Dr. Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt, but she was hired by Volkswagen Group on their equivalent of her current position. She will start her new post with Volkswagen starting January 1, 2016.

With Dr. Hohmann-Dennhardt’s departure from Daimler’s ranks, the German company hired Renata Jungo Brüngger as her replacement in the Board of Management. Like the chairperson she replaces, Renata Jungo Brüngger will be responsible for Integrity and Legal Affairs. Her responsibility starts on January 1, 2016, and her contract is set to end on December 31, 2018. That’s two years after Dieter Zetsche’s current contract with Daimler ends.

The current CEO of Daimler could get an extension of his contract despite his age. Under Zetsche's leadership, the German company has achieved the best financial results in history and enrolled in its most important revamp of the product range.

Dieter Zetsche also stated in his interview with Bunte that he prefers female employees on certain jobs in the German company. Zet even came up with an example: Daimler prefers female employees to drive new cars off the production line once they are finished and headed for delivery because fewer get damaged. “To my mind, women are the more prudent car drivers. After all, around 80 percent of the perpetrators of traffic violations are men”, Zetsche stated.

The German executive wants to make Mercedes-Benz the most attractive premium car brand for women by 2020. Zetsche feels that female customers have “not had a sufficiently important role” for the company.
