Daimler, Linde Confirm Hydrogen Stations Tie-Up

Confirming what on Wednesday morning was just a rumor, German auto group Daimler announced in the end of the same day that it has entered a partnership with The Linde Group that will allow it to jump start a network of hydrogen fuel stations, at first in Germany.

The announcement, which came soon after the German automaker ended the world tour of its B-Klasse F-Cell vehicles, makes reference to the installation of 20 hydrogen filling stations in Germany, in a bid to give this type of electric vehicle, Daimler's favorite, the same help as regular battery-powered EVs are receiving from other car makers.

Three of Germany's main cities were selected for the project, Stuttgart, Berlin and Hamburg, along with two other unnamed ones, on the north-south and east-west axes. The construction of the fuel stations will begin next year, Daimler saying that it welcomes any other ideas from petroleum, power supply or automotive industries (on Wednesday, rumor surrounding the involvement of OMV into the project also surfaced). No details of how much the project would cost Daimler have been announced.

"The fuel cell represents a decisive step forward for electromobility, as it enables zero-emission driving with high ranges and short refuelling times – and not just for passenger cars, but for commercial vehicles too. In partnership with Linde, we are now taking the next step by getting things going on the infrastructure side. 20 new hydrogen filling stations will give the market a major stimulus," said. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
