Daimler has big plans in the field of electric cars, with company insiders claiming a six-model range is in the works.
While unconfirmed at the moment, the German corporation is preparing for an electric vehicle offensive, which will start with “at least” six electric cars. Once things get up to speed, the range might reach nine electric models. Evidently, these cars will be split between the brands owned by Daimler, smart and Mercedes-Benz.
Previous reports announced that Mercedes-Benz is planning an EV sub-brand, just like BMW has with its i division, which was started by the "Project i" research and development program.
If we were to put the four models that are assigned to the Mercedes-Benz sub-brand into the context of this rumor, one would observe that only two extra cars would be required to fit the six EVs prepared by Daimler.
The smart range also has two electric vehicles in the pipeline, so this could mean that the company insiders have a good idea of what the company wants to do in the future.
However, if we look at the other figure presented by the Germans at Automobilwoche, three other models would have to be introduced, but these might only come if the electric models first launched will be successful.
The unnamed insiders quoted by Automobilwoche believe that Daimler managed to anticipate the next step in Tesla’s plan, which involved developing an entire range of electric models, not just two niche models. Instead, Daimler could bring as many as six electric vehicles on the market over six years, which has the potential of establishing a firm position in this field.
Daimler is not the only German automaker that has turned its eyes to electric cars. Both Audi and Porsche are working on production electric vehicles, and BMW already offers a fully electric car in its range, the i3.
Volkswagen and Opel, the volume brands from Germany, also have electric or series plug-in hybrid offerings, respectively. While one corporation will probably lead the market regarding sales, it will take a while until the dust settles after this match.
