Daimler Donates 20 Fuso Canter Trucks for Haiti

In response to the appeal made by former US President Bill Clinton for the automotive industry to pull ranks and provide at least 100 trucks for the shattered Haiti, German carmaker Daimler announced it will donate 20 Fuso Canter trucks.

“Everyone who looks at the images coming out of Haiti is asking himself, ‘What can I do?’ And trucks are what we do best. That's why we're giving the helpers in Haiti 20 trucks worth over half a million euros," Andreas Renschler Daimler board member said,

"We’re happy that with this donation we can help to provide the people of Haiti with urgently needed aid materials. The global presence of Daimler Trucks is an advantage for us here, because we've been able to access at short notice the Fuso Canter trucks that are already in the region.”

According to Daimler, the high payload capacity of the Fuso canter will allow the trucks to be used for distributing aid materials, even through devastated areas and along roads blocked by wreckage.

So far, the worldwide relief effort seems to have gotten stuck in the Dominican Republic, where most aid materials and supplies arrive. Due to the lack of trucks and the still covered in debris streets, most of the materials sent for Haiti are still stuck at Dominican airports.

"The aid organizations are pointing out the crucial importance of the reliable distribution of food, some of which is liable to spoilage, and the fact that transport vehicles are therefore urgently needed," Daimler says. "That's why it's supporting the assistance efforts by donating 20 Fuso Canter trucks."
