Who would have ever guessed that the crazy idea behind the smart fortwo would ever catch on, except Daimler of course. Proving that you don't need a car that's as big as your house, the fortwo has become a huge sales success.
How huge? Well, just before the Hambach factory went on summer break, it built the fortwo number 1,500,000.

The milestone car wasn't a regular example, it was the new ED version.

No the factory is shut down for two months, but it has not been silenced. It will undergo its largest upgrade since it has opened in 1998.

We expect that some time within the next year the new fortwo will be introduced, sharing its platform with a new Renault model which we believe will resurrect the "5" name.

"1.5 million smart fortwo vehicles underline the uniquely compact smart’s success as city car. It inspires drivers in more and more metropolitan areas around the world, because no other car is so perfectly adapted to urban driving. And with traffic and parking becoming increasingly challenging in these areas, many more smart will follow, “ said Dr. Annette Winkler, head of smart. “Powered by combustion engine or increasingly with fully-electric drive train, as private and fleet vehicle and also as tailored car for mobility concepts like car2go, the smart meets a worldwide demand. As of 2014, we will additionally offer our customers an entirely newly developed four-seated urban mobility car again.”

"Our unique location concept, our qualified and highly motivated workforce as well as our high production quality largely contribute to this success," said Dr. Joachim betker, head of the smart Hambach plant. "Our unique location concept, our qualified and highly motivated workforce as well as our high production quality largely contribute to this success."

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
