The Daimler plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, is in celebration these days, after the production lines spat out the 2.5 millionth engine since the facility opened its doors back in 1956.
“Mercedes-Benz do Brasil was a pioneer in the introduction of diesel engines for trucks and buses in Brazil in the 1950s and in the use of electronic management systems in engines in the 1990s,” Jurgen Ziegler, President of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil said.
“During our 53 years of operation in this country, we have accumulated vast amounts of experience with regard to the needs of the freight and passenger transport sector. Our customers acknowledge this experience and appreciate our vehicles and engines for their efficiency, quality, performance, and reliability.”
The celebration is of an even more importance because the Brazilian market is Daimler's biggest customer in terms of trucks. The local unit of Daimler managed to sell more than 23,000 units of all weight classes in 2009, representing a drop of 20 percent compared with the same period of what was the record year 2008.
In addition to Brazil, the engines manufacturer here are also delivered to other Daimler facilities in Argentina, where the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans are being built.
Thanks to the large Brazilian contribution, Mercedes-Benz do Brasil managed to keep its position as the largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in South America. Only recently, the German carmaker announced it sold 1 million trucks in Brazil alone, since its entrance in the market 53 years ago.
