Most people in Japan don’t really care about speed or acceleration times. In fact, they’re speed limits are set at around 40 km/h (25 mph) and if the cops bust you speeding your driver license ‘score’ will drop, meaning that you’ll pay more taxes. So, Japan is more concerned about style and fun you can have at low speeds, and the Daihatsu Copen has been specifically designed to meet demands.
New details about the Daihatsu Copen surfaced recently, showing more about its construction technology and customizability, promising to be one of the most enjoyable convertible 2-seater kei cars on the market.
First thing to mention is the fact that the new Copen is built on a new lightweight yet strong monocoque framework called the D-Frame (no puns intended) which is said to be three times more stiffer than the last Kopen.
Combined with body panels made out of special resins, the whole vehicle will tip the scale at 870 kg (1918 lb), making it an agile and responsive little car. Oh, almost forgot... around 11 body panels (excluding doors and roof) can be replaceable and the automaker will offer multiple designs available. This thing also applies for interior trimming panels.
As within the kei car world, the Copen will be powered by a turbocharged three-cylinder KF-VET engine which will assure the limited 64 hp (63 bhp, 47 kW) and 92 Nm (68 lb-ft) of torque. Transmission wise, a 5-speed manual and a CVT will be available. Average fuel consumption for this baby is said to be around 4.5 l/100 km (52.2 mpg).
