Go say whatever you want, you know we’re right: nothing says happy birthday like an animated cake that is shaped like a truck and that can transform into Optimus Prime. The best part is that you can make one for your kid too.
Now, to be fully honest with you the fellow behind this contraption is, in fact, an industrial designer, so you’re going to need a little bit of help to make a similar cake for your son. Until we get into the specifics, we would like to talk a little more about this (awesome) cake.

Rusell Munro and his wife were asked for a Transformers cake by their son who was about to turn 6, but instead of doing so they thought of something different that they could make themselves.

Mothers out there would regularly say that kids these days don’t actually fall for cakes cooked at home; they all want this action heroes look-alike sweets, especially when it’s a birthday gift. But these parents wouldn’t take no for an answer, so they came up with this great plan.

Munro has used the power of 3D printing and the proper amount of imagination to create a birthday cake in the shape of Transformer Optimus Prime, one that is actually able to transform into a standing robot with humanoid chassis. The excitement both parents hoped for did not fail to come, as amazement conquered both their son and most of the kids at the party.

From what we could observe in the video, it seems there are five main components created with a 3D printer, each arm, the chest, the thighs and the lower legs. The thighs and chest appear to be the only movable pieces while the lower legs stand in place to support the structure. To make it look accurate, Munro also made the arms pop out from the chest once the robot is fully standing.

This ‘animated cake platform’ has a 3D printed skeleton. Steel fishing wire is wound up by a stepper motor that pull the skeleton to a standing position. A dc motor with lead screw lifts the head and open the arms. All controlled by Arduino. It was a team effort by me and my wife who did the cake and icing.”

These are pretty much all the details the creator of this contraption has unveiled so far. He did mention that he will write up further information about how it works and release the STL files soon.
