Dacia Sold Over 100,000 Cars in France Last Year

Dacia, Romania’s only carmaker, has managed to sell a record number of cars in France last year. The automaker's French dealers shifted over 100,000 units in 2010, which is a premiere for Dacia, who also increased its market share.

Thanks to high demand for its cheaper models, Dacia has reached a market share of 4.6 percent, marking an increase of 70.9 percent over the previous year. The 104,642 cars sold in France by the Pitesti car manufacturer during the January to December period of 2010 is also much higher than the 2009 result, when 61,217 cars were sold in France.

What’s more interesting is that the carmaker has sold more cars in the European country than it did in its domestic Romanian market. Counting light commercial vehicles, Dacia’s new car registrations in France increased by 65.6 percent to 110,076 units and the carmaker had a market share of 4.1 percent. In Romania, only 27,000 Dacia cars were sold in the first 11 months of 2010.

Partly to thank for the company’s success is the Duster, that has little to no SUV competitors in sight of its €12,000 ($16,000) price point. The entry level Dacia Duster has a 16V, 1.6-liter engine that is then available in 4WD for a cost of about €2,000 ($3,600) extra. Other engine options include the 1.5 dCi available in 85 or 105 hp, and the top of the range 1.5-liter in 4WD option.

Recently, Dacia has extended its model range with the addition of three electric Logan models in the US. The three models are the Electric Wagon (Logan MCV), Electric Cargo Van (Logan Van) and Electric truck (Logan Pick-up).
