CVG to Build MRAP Prototype for Afghanistan

The Commercial Vehicle Group, an American supplier of integrated solutions for the automotive industry was put in charge of the development of the new series of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles, to be used by the US Army in Afghanistan.

"Among CVG's strengths are its engineering competencies and rapid turnaround capabilities. These combine to make our Company a natural fit for this project with its tight schedules and need for innovative engineering skills. We value our partnership with this contractor and welcome the opportunity to continue to work with them on this and future projects," Kevin Frailey, CVG's Electrical Systems vice president said in a release.

The MRAP to be developed by CVG is, as it should, a "highly maneuverable armored vehicle", designed and tested to aid US soldiers in hostile, non-urban environments. Being military, no technical details have been provided for the MRAP.

CVG will develop the prototype vehicle for the Army and, when it will go into production, the supplier will give the contractor wire harness and cable assemblies, windscreen wiper systems, driver seat components and electrical panel assemblies.

The new vehicle is needed by US armed forces as the good old HMMWV has proven to be a not so effective weapon in dealing with improvised explosive devices (IED). With about 60 percent of the US Army death toll in Iraq being attributed to IEDs, finding better protection for troops has become a primary focus for the armed forces.

"CVG has had employees serve in the areas designated for these vehicles. It brings us great pride to assist in a program that helps protect and serve the men and women who defend our country," Mervin Dunn, CVG CEO added.
