Custom Toyota Prius Isn’t as Bad as You Think at Tokyo Salon 2015

Some believe that tuning a Toyota Prius is a waste of money and it will always look like a stupid ricer. Well, not always; you can strip it out, fit a Harley Davidson V-twin and go race in a demolition derby or install a full-on V8 under that hood and carve a transmission tunnel to power the rear wheels, transforming it into the ultimate sleeper.

Or you can simply go Japan-style and only tinker with its looks. Add a crazy body kit, change the head and taillamps, bolt on some big rims and lower it a bit. A strange color will also help and you can also add in some extra entertainment features.

You could end up owning something like this one recently showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2015 in MaMakuhari Messe. It’s called the KUHLHYBRID and it actually looks nice with that special silver paint all over the place. The only thing we don’t like is the bagged wheels, which turns it into an almost unusable car. Maybe it’s running on an air suspension and sits that low only when it’s parked.

Still, an interesting build we strongly recommend seeing in the clip bellow. And if you wonder why the Japanese have a culture revolving around customizing low-powered hybrid cars, the answer is low speed limits. Some don’t care about horsepower, burnouts and zero-to-sixty times and they’re satisfied with a cool looking car.
