Having cars inside one of New York's massive buildings for an auto show is fine, but when one of those vehicles catches fire, the whole story turns against the event altogether. And this is where the line between factory and tuned vehicles is drawn.
The story has to do with a Porsche 911 Turbo that went up in flames earlier today, giving the New York Auto show a hot ending in a literal sense. We're talking about a senior Zuffenhausen machine belonging to the 993 generation, which was the last one to use air cooling.
However, the Porsche had been customized, hence its presence in the special vehicle section of the event. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, the flames quickly spread around the engine compartment.
Those present decided it was best to make a run for it, since the car was slowly starting to look like a bomb waiting to explode. Nevertheless, one brave man got his hands on a fire extinguisher and subdued the fire, much to everybody's relief.
To the best of our knowledge, nobody was injured in the incident, nor was the Javits Center damaged by the flames.
You can check out the whole shenanigan in the piece of footage below, which comes from Instagram user moz1lla.
Don't get us wrong here, we have nothing against modified cars. In fact, we've brought you so many stories on Rauh-Welt Begriff Porsches that, if we held the slightest thing against such machines, the God of Double Standards would probably wipe us off the face of this planet instantly.
However, when you play with a car, the resulting level of safety isn't always on par with the one guaranteed by a factory vehicle. The solution here would be for the vehicles involved in shows to perhaps go through a more thorough inspection before being parked inside.
Auto shows have rules that limit the amount of fuel participating vehicles can hold in their tanks, but even so, the damage can get serious.
The only good side of the story is that the fire seems to have been put out quickly. Here's to hoping the 993 Turbo recovers quickly.
